I’m going to play devil’s advocate here even though I happen to personally agree with you that modern horror tends to shock and disgust more than anything.

There’s different ways of being scared. “Horror” as an umbrella genre, has many sub genres beneath it. Things like “body horror” “psychological horror” “gothic horror” “comedy horror” “action horror” as well as “thrillers” and “chillers”.

There’s no one way of doing it. It’s all up to the creator as to what their goal is. Does the creator want to give the audience a sense of dread and anxiety? Or do they want to shock and disgust the audience? Or do they simply want to make lots and lots of money by aping the current trends?

Relies heavily on jus the crepiness. It’s so damn creepy. Except 4 the end which is a huge pay off. Interesting characters, especially Irena. All women are killer cats.

The part where the girl came screaming home and pounding the door was great. Her family wouldn’t let her in and she’s killed by the panther. The mom gasps as blood floods under the door and into the kitchen. Love that film noir effect.

However, the theme of a child’s imagination and the wonders of childhood actually made the movie so good that it’s usually seen in child psychology classes.

Also, the 80’s remake is pretty good but the original is better.
