Almost. When speaking of a processor and saying it’s “32-bit” or “64-bit” they’re *typically* referring to how much memory it can address and access; in 32-bit CPU’s it’s at most 4 GB and 64-bit CPU’s it’s at most 1 EB, one exabyte. (Yes, I know technically its 4 GiB and 1 EiB, but most people aren’t familiar with Gibibytes or Exbibytes).

Someone earlier gave a great analogy describing using words with only 5 letters and 20 letters… I can’t remember exactly how they worded it, but it’s a great analogy to how this all works for a computer.

The Atari Jaguar had a 32-bit video processor, but the processor that actually processed the game was a 64-bit processor. Most people know the term Gigabyte, because that’s used to represent the storage space on a device. 8 bits == 1 byte. 64 bits == 8 bytes. 1 Gigabyte == 1,000,000,000 Bits. Most computers nowadays have a 64-bit processor.

On PC many games only run on 64 bit operating systems. We also talk about video memory and processor cores – this is at heart the same thing as bits. It’s all numbers that describe the capabilities of a system. In Nerd language that’s “the complexity of the shit it can run”.

I remember actually seeing this console in person when I was a kid. I’m 23 now, and way back when I was 6 or 7, my mom dated this one guy a couple times, and he had 2 or 3 teenage sons. And low and behold, I can real vaguely remember the day I was taken over to meet all of them, and THIS was the video game console they had and were playing around with when we got there. I swear, that’s how bad this system was and how it failed, is I couldn’t even identify it until many years later when I watch an AVGN video (I distinctly remember one of them turning it on with his big toe, since that red button is sitting right there and all, and I do not know of any other console that had a similar power switch in that position or color). I’m sure my brother knew what console this was at the time and probably throughout the years to follow, but I don’t remember ever asking him what it was except for when we first saw it, and I really don’t remember what all was said that day, considering how young I was lol.
