A part of pop culture that was way before my time, this DVD does give us the best attempt to recreate the “horror spookshow” of my parents generation.

Your sensory systems, including sight, breaks down the input into its individual components that are represented by individual clusters of neurons in your brain. In this case, there is a certain set of neurons that fire as you see the spiral. What happens is that neurons will “tire out” and decrease their activity if repeatedly activated. So, if you stare at the spiral then look away, the “spiral neurons” will need time to reactivate, and you end up seeing an inverse of the spiral wherever you look, distorting your vision. If you look at a block of color long enough and then stare at a white wall, you’ll see the same block with the opposing color (red to green, etc); this is the same kind of phenomenon.
