That being said, I’m surprised a lot of people, even those who love the film, still don’t “get it” as far as why the day repeats over and over.

What we have here is the same predicament Bill Murray finds himself in with the movie “Scrooged”. Just as in that film, Murray plays a character who’s not very nice, and so, external forces take action to teach him a lesson and force him to straighten up. While this is made abundantly clear in “Scrooged”, it’s only implied for the viewer to figure out for themselves in “Groundhog Day”. At first, Murray goes through all the stages, disbelief, despair, personal gain, but soon, he makes a conscious choice to be a better person. When he finally becomes the good person he ought to be, the “curse” is lifted, with whatever “higher power” doing this to him finally satisfied that Murray has changed his ways enough to allow him to get on with life.

I do have one theory about “who” might be responsible: The elderly black bartender we see at the bar room, who never utters a word, but just by his facial expressions alone, you can tell whether he approves or disapproves of what Murray says or does. It’s my guess that this “bartender” is the “watcher”, if not the actual instigator, of the time flux. When he finally sees how good Murray has become to other people, we see he looks on approvingly, and allows February 2nd to finally pass.

In any event, “Groundhog Day” is among Bill Murray’s finest and most under rated work of his career. I’m glad this film was made.

And I don’t think we ever saw it through to the end, my half-assed teachers just started it and left us till the class was over. It wasn’t until years later that I saw the ending, though that was some time ago now, I really ought to re-watch it as it never seem to air any more.
