They’re in black and white collections now.. the first collection is like 300+ pages… the fist 7 issues of the original series.. wish they were in color, but it’s better then nothing, and I’m definitely going to pick some of the collections up..

When Nickelodeon bought the rights to TMNT, they gave comic publisher IDW rights to produce new comics and publish collections of old ones. If anyone wants to read old Turtle comics now, they should look for them.

I’m surprised james doesn’t say how the 2003 cartoon actually took more stories from the comics and followed much more closely than either the movies or the 80 series. he made a video complaining about the misplaced order of the episodes in the dvd’s so he must’ve at least seen a season or 2 of the 2003 cartoon.

I will admit though I thought once they went to space I thought they were just making stuff up I didn’t know they were actually more or less following the comic more than anything else. no wonder it was my favorite version. (no offence to the glorious 80’s cartoon)

Probably the reason why they only did the 4 collections is because that’s about all the comics that Eastman & Laird did. After that it was a rotating series of writers and artists and the story didn’t have much continuity. Eastman & Laird did return for “Return to New York” issues 18-20 I believe, in which they did explain how the Shredder had returned. There were the 5 “micro series” one-shots, 4 for the Turtles and one for the Fugitoid which explained the origin of Honeycutt and Casey Jones (and Mike’s cat). There was also the parallel book Tales of the TMNT where characters like the Rat King debuted who later made it to the cartoon. Laird came back years later after Eastman had handed over the rights to him, he did Volume 4 which was a continuation of the original series. The turtles were grown up, they all turned 30 and the Utroms revealed their existence to the world so now the Turtles didn’t have to hide anymore, they could live publicly and everyone pretty much thought they were aliens. It was an okay book that also petered out without an ending as Laird focused on the cartoon relaunch and new movie. Now he’s sold the TMNT to Nickelodeon so I guess that’s pretty much it for the classic stories.

I just got this nice hard cover compilation this Christmas that contains issues 1-7, plus a Rapheal Micro Series issue (which James seems to have missed in this review). I very much enjoyed reading it, and i’d like to get the second volume, which i saw on amazon for about the same price.
