DS9 was a really different take on the franchise. It was less about adventure and exploration, but more about digging further into the world of Star Trek. The race, the politics, the economy. To me it was so-so, sometimes good, sometimes too corny and boring.
It’s last season was a blast though.
But in the genre, I would recommend watching Babylon 5 instead. It was an awesome show.

Thanks to netflix, I am in touch with my inner trekkie. Sadly, netflix doesn’t have ANY of the star trek movies on it (even the most recent one). Anyway, it’s cool to know that finally I have found the place where nerds are built, Cinemassacre.com =) .

Took about two years. Maybe I’ll join you watching TOS (slowly because I’m busy too).

My thoughts on the experience: very enchanting, and it made me feel like I’m now a part of something I never understood before. Also, all the Trekkies start coming out of the woodwork when you know the lingo. More than anything, it’s like I’m in on the joke now, and occasionally I like to romanticize and think about that vision for our galaxy. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend it (sorry, guys). Just think – Star Wars squeezed a fantastical universe into 5 hours of films! While Trek wins out just for scale and quantity’s sake, if we’re going pound for pound, there’s just no comparison! (Of course, as Wars puts out more and more shit, those ratios approach each other. Of course, I’m not really counting the novels, Ewoks and Droids franchises, etc.)

Well, sort of. I wnat to see every episode of Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation. The other series just aren’t as magical to me.

What an excellent series that is.
I’ve seen most of the Next Generation via the same “when it’s on tv” method, but I’m considering doing the same for that. TNG was the trek of my 90’s childhood so I have soft spot for it. I also downloaded all of the most recent series “Enterprise” just after it had finished airjng around 05 and I thought that was pretty brilliant too – more near-future, more relatable from a social and scientific perspective.

So I guess that just leaves the original series, which is excellent too, but its further down my list than the other series’. Oh, and DS9, which I hate with a fiery passion.

TOS is old hat for me, and I’ve seen every episode more times than I could ever count. Honestly though, the third season is really underrated. While it does have some dumb episodes, there are some really good episodes as well. Also, bad TOS episodes are better than bad TNG or Voyager episodes. I’ll take “Spock’s Brain” or “The Way to Eden” over TNG’s “Masks” or Voyager’s “Threshold” any day.

At the beginning of this year, I finished my DVD collection of every series and movie, then ripped them all to ISO files on a 3 TB hard drive hooked up to a streaming media player. Wanted to watch everything in order without having to remove and switch discs. Also I was introducing the show to my wife, who never really watched other than a little of TNG here and there. We watched TOS in production order, since watching a few episodes and then going back to “Where No Man Has Gone Before” makes no sense. It’s really fun to watch the show with a fresh perspective through my wife’s eyes. I get questions about things that I take for granted, like “What do all the different colored shirts mean?” and “How come almost every alien race they meet look exactly like humans?” I think my favorite question was probably “Why did they change from this to Patrick Stewart and the Reading Rainbow guy?” That one had a long answer.

We’re half way through The Animated Series right now, and going to keep going all the way until the end of Enterprise. So my advice to you James is stay the course and keep enjoying it at your own pace.

A lot of good episodes, with solid ideas for a series. The first season is a classic, só, despite of some “normal” episodes, we cannot talk badly about it. And the third season has some good episodes, like ‘Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” and “The Enterprise Incident”, but overall is very weak.
