I remember all those stories you’ve eloquently summarised. I grew up with Carl Barks Disney comics in the 70’s in New Zealand and probably collected the majority of them, but unfortunately they have deteriorated over the years so only have the memories of them left. I loved the colourful stories and beautiful artwork which fuelled my imagination while teaching me some of life’s lessons in an entertaining, funny way. As a child I didn’t understood why the Disney animated shorts were no comparison to these comics but now understand it was due to the way Carl Barks was able to inject his life experiences, perspective, and humour into these comics. Thanks for the trip down memory lane of my childhood.

You can easily find hardcover books by both authors here. I love both but Rosa is my favorite because of the consistent mythology he built around the characters using Barks’s work as a base.

I remember the phone cable even taking the shape of Scrooge’s silhouette once.

I really love it, it’s one of the best life stories ever told, it’s not on par with Carl Barks’ stories but it comes really damn close.

Mike briefly mentioned Don Rosa’s “biography” of Uncle Scrooge. While I agree that Barks didn’t have a particular backstory in mind for Uncle Scrooge, I found Rosa’s work great fun, well-written, well-researched and extremely well-drawn, which is typical of his meticulous work involving fairly complex settings and historical reference. It makes many scattered mentions of Bark’s stories, of course, but I saw it more as a affectionate tribute to him and his beloved character than a way of pushing an “official canon” of Scrooge’s life that wasn’t there to being with.
