It was called the “parallax effect,” and it was created by moving the layers at offset speed intervals to create a pseudo two-point perspective.

Most games developed through 1985 didn’t have them, so you can see they had relatively simple gameplay (since they didn’t have a whole lot of memory for complex gameplay) and extremely sparse graphics (since they had to fit all the game’s graphics in a single tileset). Super Mario Bros. was about as complex as you could get.
Most games from 1986 and later had mappers.
I’d consider the NES to have a third-generation from about 1988 or so, when they made improved mappers to allow better sound (Famicom-only) and more advanced scrolling techniques like parallax.

Eng: I remember this game from my childhood when Nintendo 8-bit came to Sweden around 1987 my dad had this game at rent games into his video store in Uppsala.
