The reason it’s really done is because it’s incredibly easy to throw the audience off of the killer is dressed like a woman but is really a man, for some reason people never guess that the mysterious figure could be in drag. Though none of them are actually transgender characters, not even Buffalo Bill, he’s thrown in as a reference to the staple and is explicitly stated to not actually have Gender Dysphoria by Hannibal Lecter. Though I’m really thrown for a loop as to why Leatherhead dresses in drag.
