Rag, I agree. Theirs and James’ content is usually pretty good, but this particular talk seemed like a step down in terms of enthusiastically giving a new and different game a chance.

Pat, I’m not saying they don’t have a right to say it, so I don’t know what you’re blaring on about. The mere fact that I express disagreement with how the game is portrayed does not mean I’m therefore holding them to commercial review standards (none of which I have paid for since the advent of the internet and demise of gaming magazines–when was the last time you paid for a review of something?). Rag’s comment and my response above provide what I’ve come to expect from their talks on gaming.

Actually, I was wrong. Mike does tilt the GamePad at one point, and Ryan realizes that’s how he’s controlling the camera. My bad.

So basically, we want new things, but we really don’t.

That’s actually the default control scheme, and it changes the experience/gameplay a lot more than people acknowledge. I mean, there’s never previously been a shooter on a home console with those kinds of controls. You have to actually change the settings manually if you want to play with the “standard” dual analog. And when Nintendo sets something as the default control scheme, you know it’s their way of saying, “This is brilliant shit. Stop crying and just try it. You’ll learn to love it.” Just like a lot of people learned to love the motion plus controls in Skyward Sword, to a point where they didn’t want to go back to playing Zelda without them. Kudos to Nintendo for always trying to find solutions to things that suck (like dual analog, which I’ve personally never been a fan of).

I also don’t think Mike and Ryan come across very objectively or even very well for that matter in this discussion compared to some of their previous game talks. It’s a bit disappointing and disheartening, because as a fan of Cinemssacre, I had hoped there would be more of an effort from someone on this site to really hunker down and take a good crack at Splatoon rather than just glossing over it. I’d like to see James play it, too, if he’s interested.

Yes yes false equate them getting ad revenue with people being paid directly to write commercial grade reviews or you paying for them directly if you must.

A grain of salt is what you take from amateur game review. No matter how far fetched their review of it is, it is both valid and theirs to make under that premise, comparing them to other sites that do reviews professionally as a cores business is asinine.

Point denied, they are here to entertain as well as give thoughts and are often mixing in personal characters that leak into all sorts of their content inconsistently.

Getting mad at this is like getting mad at a street preachers technical view on aspects of the bible. Simmer down.

By “unfair comparisons” I mean that by the same principles one could make a lot of good games sound less polished and fun than they are to a lot of players. If I said “wrong” instead, would you be happier?

The site does get paid through ad revenues. I’m not a Splatoon or Nintendo fanboy (I don’t own the game or a Wii U and don’t plan to in the foreseeable future; I used to be a console gamer but nowadays I really only play games on pc/Steam except occasionally when I’m with friends), but a number of experienced/core gaming sites and channels have done a good job of conveying Splatoon’s appeal. I simply take issue with this video because the game is dismissed for reasons in which the game is different and Mike and Ryan don’t seem to understand it (how the various mechanics work, how the points via terrain covered is an alternative to the kill counts of conventional online competitive shooters and not simply a narrow-premised mini-game like Mario Party Stamp Out, how the feel is like 90s retro and a Jet Set Radio-styled universe that speaks its own language and not Nintendo trying too hard to fit in to what’s cool, etc.).
