They changed it for SMB2global. IIRC Birdo can respawn if you go far enough away in either version of this game. It is one of them things common to many 8-bit games. Someone else may have already commented about this so hope you don’t mind me saying it as well.

Birdoes ALWAYS respawn when you scroll them off screen. This has been like this back in SMB2, and it’s also like this in DDP. It’s not a glitch, and it’s definitely not new or amazing as you make it out to be.
