“Cartridge” refers to the protective shell… so both NES games and VHS tapes are technically cartridges. The technical term for the game technology is “ROM cartridge”.

We just call them VHS tapes because the terminology was established by open-reel audio tape. (Same reason we refer to movies as “film”.)

Even with that though, I almost could not get passed the level with the lollipop chasing me because something about using any controller other than an NES one making that stage incredibly more difficult that usual.
