We played Gex and PO’d. PO’d was kind of like a Duke Nukem type thing, with the guns, gore, and girls. I always liked that you played as a big fat chef, at least according to the box art. Both that game and Gex seemed very cool and cutting edge to me as a child at that specific point in time. Looking back, like you said, just okay. Characters like Gex and Bubsy were trying too hard and failing to be cool. Sonic just was! Mario wasn’t trying to be cool! He was just a humble plumber.

I loved how it said lines from movies or TV shows. Made me more interest in hearing what he is going to say then actually playing it. It was still fun to play though.

They even had sequels too, which were decent too. No offence, but I think you guys really suck at that game (or at least in the 3DO version). You’re great gamer’s and all, just not at that game.

Btw, it may be interesting to know that the same creators of the Gex trilogy are the same ones you made the Tomb Raider series.

However being a big fan of lizards and geckos in particular I would see the ad in the video game magazines each month, see photos of game play from the game, cool “gecko with attitude” cover art and more and imagine myself playing the game. I wanted it badly, I wanted to spend my next six Christmas’ worth of presents just for my parents to buy me a damn 3DO and a copy of Gex.

I’m glad they didn’t.

They may have made your 3DO, but Electronic Arts were the ones behind it. Panasonic just made the hardware, as did Sanyo and Goldstar. Trip Hawkins is a genious and was able to create a system without fronting the costs for the hardware. Sure it failed, but the mere idea from an economics standpoint is outstanding and would not happen today.

It wasn’t that rare in 16-bits era and later… Streets of Rage, Revenge of Shinobi and many others allowed to select a control scheme, you probably never noticed that 🙂

Gex 3D was also on the N64. They should definitely give either version a try.
