I want to hear what James think and his overall opinion about Dark Souls.

Hopping on the retro bus is not the same as arguing against innovation. Retro games were innovation by definition. It’s called nostalgia that keeps you going back. When it comes to modern games you can be picky towards innovation since retro games did what you wanted them to; now you want something different.

However, agreeing with common sentiment: it’s just another FPS that looks like a complete clone of Halo (the style). After going to tournaments for Halo 1, I burnt myself out on FPS games long ago. I mourn that this game wasn’t around back then. I would have played for sure.

That being said, it does feel a bit funny for Mike to complain about them not innovating when he seems to leap on anything vaguely retro (ie. pre-1995). :p Of course, he’s completely entitled to his preferences, but I do enjoy modern FPSes like Wolfenstein TNO that combine interesting gameplay and level design with well presented storylines.

Multiplayer FPS games are so overdone, as nice as this one looks, it wouldn’t have any long term appeal to me. I make up my mind with games within a few minutes also, pretty sure we aren’t a small minority either. The whole ‘taking a risk’ argument is more of an excuse, the best games I have played have been radically different. A developer with a passion and willing to take a risk will score big bucks.

He is right though. This type of game play has been going on since 1999, with Quake III and Unreal Tournament. Online multiplayer FPS is a super overdone genre.

Developers take a HUGE risk every time they make a game. This is why they stick with formulas that are tried and true and work. Because they know they will make their investment back. You don’t see much experimentation with AAA titles anymore because the cost is too great and they run the risk of the game not selling well.

Straight to the point. I like it. ^^

He sees 5 minutes of the game and already decides it offers nothing new. It’s especially funny considering what he likes best are retro classic style games like Super Amazing Wagon Adventure. Give the games a chance, dude!

If he’s talking about Planet vs Zombies: Garden Warfare (which seems likely), then I agree. Overwatch is yet another arena FPS. It tries to be charming with the Pixar-ish animations and a light hearted atmosphere like TF2, but it seems like Blizzard is smearing it on kind of thick. Blizzard made all these heart-warming trailers for a game that ultimately didn’t need them. TF2 gave their classes personalities as well, but they did it in a way that didn’t try to overshadow what the game actually is, a multiplayer FPS. Overwatch is overreaching, and the effort seems wasted on a game that is a simple multiplayer frag-fest. If it was some kind of epicly scaled, squad-based third person adventure game, then I could see the appeal. But I think Overwatch is going to fall flat. The charm will wear thin soon after release.
