Then you said the 3D version wasn’t that dark and that’s when it came to me: maybe the 3D version is brighter because of the 3D glasses.

Those glasses, or at least, those that use active shutter, “darken” the image. Maybe the 3D version was made brighter to compensate this problem and if you use passive glasses, then the movie does look better.

On PCs using NVidia 3D Vision technology, newer monitors have a light boost feature when using 3D to compensate for the darker image caused by the glasses (that’s how I watched this movie, using 3D Vision on the PC)
