I remember being obsessed with the books when I was a kid and it was enough of a challenge when Waldo was the right colors!

I guess you could say that some of the weird-color Waldos are supposed to “Odlaw”, the evil anti-Waldo (or if we’re using Mario Bros. naming conventions, he’s called “Wawaldo”).
