Mighty Joe Young is one of the absolute best of the Classic Monster Movies, though it’s not really a “monster” movie. You put it perfectly, Joe is charming, both movie and ape. It’s one of my all-time favorites from back when WNYW would play monster movies on Saturdays. I even love the remake, though the original is definitely better. Three cheers for Joe!
