Platform games should mark unsafe platforms, like in castlevania 2 holy water should not be used as a means to walk .
You have to hàva a balance which is hard to do as gaming ecomes more popular, and you need to make games accessible to everyone.

In Alttp, you mostly had to hit your sword on the walls to detect something.

IIRC you can even jump out at that moment leaving the tank stuck mid-turn.
